Do not expect your memory to fail you. A lot of people assume that you lose your memory with age. Actually, this is not always the case. Expecting that your memory will start to go can actually damage your memory. When others start doubting your ability to remember things, you may begin to believe them. Simply believing that you have a good memory can help it stay that way.
It is very frustrating to try to locate a thought, word or memory and coming up blank. To help spur your memory, try clearing your mind briefly. If searching for something, take a moment to breathe deeply, remove extraneous thoughts, and then start looking with a fresh perspective.
Get plenty of well-deserved rest. Research has demonstrated that the amount of sleep you get is one factor that impacts memory. If you lack concentration, you won't be able to convert short-term memory into long-term memory.
If there are times when someone has given you information and you are having a hard time remembering it, you may want to try to put it in your own words and then try to learn it. People often struggle to remember words or concepts that do not feel like their own.
If this happens to you, take a short break each hour and give your mind time to rest. You will then be able to remember the information.
Practice good breathing techniques multiple times per day. Take several deep breaths through your nose at the top of each hour. This relaxes your body, and increases the amount of oxygen to your brain. Extra oxygen will fuel your brain, helping it to stay sharp and able to recall and remember information.
If you need to retain a great deal of information, you may find it useful to regularly switch up your study locations. The reason for this is to dissociate the information with a specific location, and make it a more basic part of you. When you study the information in a variety of places, it is more likely to be stored in your long-term memory.
Having a well functioning memory is a tremendous advantage. There are a number of different ways that it can make your lie easier.
