Find out what you can do to improve your memory

Memory is one of the things we take for granted in life, until we begin to lose it. Many degenerative diseases can take hold of us and seize our ability to do one of the most basic actions in life: remember. This article provides some tips and tricks to coping with memory loss and help improve your memory.

Being organized can greatly decrease the effects and frustrations of memory loss. Keep a dedicated notebook or calendar for writing down daily tasks. Say out loud each entry as you write it down. Keep checklists of things to do, and cross out each one as you do it. And create a dedicated area for commonly used items such keys, wallets and other essentials.

When trying to memorize a large bit of information or a number which is long, you can retain the information by learning it in chunks. Take the information and group it into small segments that you are able to easily retain. When you have the small segments memorized, add the groups together two at a time until you have remembered it all.

Here is a trick for memory! As trivial as it may seem, try to do handstands! By standing on your hands, you are allowing blood flow to your brain. Having sufficient blood flow to your brain helps it to absorb and remember new information. You could also try lying on your back on your bed with your head hanging off the end!

A great tip for improving your memory is to make sure that you do not wait until the last minute to try to remember a large amount of information such as for a test. This is crucial because your brain is not meant to be able to handle large amounts of information at one time. It is much better at slowly taking on an increased amount of information.

Know your learning style, this will help you to remember information. Some people remember things better by seeing the information first. Others, by hearing the information or by physically doing something to help them recall it. Knowing your learning style will help you decide if note-taking, listening to lectures or reading books and articles work's best for you.

To improve your memory, try to focus your attention on something by removing anything that can distract you from the task at hand. When you spend time to focus, the item of focus moves from short-term memory to long-term memory. Distraction adversely affects focus, and that results in poor memory.

Remember the phrase "righty tighty lefty loosy". Sounds meaningless huh? It's anything but if you never want to be confused again on which way to turn a knob, bolt, nut or whatever to tighten it and which way to turn it to loosen it! Just remember it doesn't work in some specialized applications but it works in most general cases.

Whether you have a memory loss disorder, have suffered an accident, or are dealing with Alzheimer's, losing the ability to remember simple things is difficult. Hopefully this article has provided some helpful and thoughtful insight to help you not only cope with memory loss, but also assist you in re-gaining memory.
